GoPro MISSION 1 PRO ILS vs MISSION 1 PRO: Lens & Filter Guide
Freewell field notes / camera systems / 18 September 2026
One sensor.
Two ways to build your shot.
GoPro MISSION 1 PRO ILS vs MISSION 1 PRO: choose your lens workflow first, then build the filter kit around it.
The fixed-lens PRO is the simpler pick for fast travel and action coverage. The ILS makes sense when choosing the lens is part of the creative brief. Their shared imaging platform means the buying decision is about how you shoot—and what you need to carry.
Freewell’s custom-fit MISSION 1 PRO / MISSION 1 filters are for those fixed-lens cameras only. Do not buy them for the MISSION 1 PRO ILS. On ILS, filter compatibility depends on the attached Micro Four Thirds lens, its front filter thread and physical clearance.
01 / The deciding difference
Choose the way you want to work.
A / MISSION 1 PRO ILS
Build around the lens.
Change focal length and rendering for a planned shot: a wider establishing view, a tighter detail or a deliberate focus transition. Budget for the lens, compatible filters and any rig support as a complete system.
Best starting question: which lens does this sequence need?
B / MISSION 1 PRO
Keep the setup compact.
Keep the integrated lens on the camera and concentrate on framing, movement and exposure. It is an easier fit when you are packing light or cannot pause the action to change lenses.
Best starting question: how quickly can I be ready to shoot?
The recommendations are Freewell’s editorial guidance. GoPro confirms the shared 50MP 1-inch sensor and GP3 processor in its ILS launch announcement.

Sources: GoPro technical comparison, ILS specifications and FAQ and MISSION 1 Series overview. Verified 18 September 2026. Frame-rate maxima belong to different modes; they are not simultaneous settings. GoPro specifies 1080p960 Burst Slo-Mo as 8-bit without GP-Log2. Lens and rig weight are additional on ILS.
Open Gate: room to reframe
A taller 4:3 capture can help when one sequence needs both landscape and portrait edits. Leave room around the subject while shooting; reframing still costs resolution and cannot recover anything outside the recorded frame.
Slow motion: plan the light
High frame rates are useful for a specific moment. They also change the exposure and editing workflow. Choose the delivery frame rate first, then decide how much slow motion the story actually needs.
03 / Who each camera is for
Match the camera to the day.
Choose PRO for…
- Travel films with a small bag and quick transitions between locations.
- Action and POV sequences where managing a separate lens adds friction.
- A straightforward exposure kit built around dedicated Freewell MISSION filters.
- Water-based use within GoPro’s stated camera limits; check every accessory separately.
Choose ILS for…
- Planned documentary inserts, product details and controlled camera positions.
- Filmmakers comfortable setting focus and aperture manually.
- A lens-led look or framing choice that an integrated wide lens cannot provide.
- A compact additional camera within a production that already manages lenses and support.

Before choosing an ILS lens
The mount is MFT, but the sensor is 1-inch type. GoPro lists approximately 2.7× crop without stabilization, or 3× with stabilization. There are no electronic lens contacts and no autofocus: the lens must support manual focus and manual or suitable fixed aperture. Read GoPro’s lens FAQ.
Enter the lens focal length correctly for HyperSmooth. GoPro lists supported rectilinear lenses and selected fisheyes; its launch notes say guaranteed testing extends to 50mm and longer lenses can vary. For fixed-aperture lenses, GoPro specifies an aperture no greater than f/4.5. Check the exact lens against GoPro’s guidance before purchase. See GoPro’s compatibility footnotes.
Our buying advice: price the complete ILS setup, including the lens, filters and support. A lighter camera body does not automatically mean a lighter working kit.
04 / Freewell filter guide
For the fixed-lens PRO, start with the shot.
Use ND when you need to reduce light while retaining your chosen shutter speed. Use polarization when you want to manage reflections. Add diffusion when the softer highlight treatment suits the scene.
They are custom-fit fixed-lens filters. They are not compatible with MISSION 1 PRO ILS.

A practical starting workflow
- Set your frame rate and intended motion. For a conventional motion-blur starting point, try 1/50s at 25fps or 1/60s at 30fps. These are creative starting points, not mandatory settings.
- Choose ND by exposure. ND8, ND16, ND32 and ND64 reduce light by 3, 4, 5 and 6 stops respectively. Check highlights and adjust strength as the scene changes.
- Check movement before committing. A slower shutter can create blur that stabilization cannot remove. For vigorous action, a faster shutter may give the cleaner result.
- Use polarization selectively. Check the whole frame for uneven sky darkening or reflections you actually wanted to keep. Recheck after changing camera direction.
Creative filters: ND1000 is approximately 10 stops and is useful for supported long-exposure stills. Glow Mist 1/4 adds diffusion; preview bright point lights before a full take. LPR is intended for selected artificial-light conditions and is not a universal cure for night color or mixed LED lighting.
05 / A separate filter path for ILS
Read the lens thread. Then choose the filter.
“Micro Four Thirds” describes the camera-side lens mount. It does not specify the diameter or construction of the front of the lens.
Step 1 / Identify
Find the exact lens.
Read the lens model and its filter-thread specification. A marking such as Ø58mm means a 58mm filter thread; the focal length printed on the lens is a different measurement.
Step 2 / Match
Check the mounting method.
Choose the correct threaded filter or a system with the appropriate base ring. A lens with a protruding front element or no front thread may need a specialist holder.
Step 3 / Inspect
Confirm clearance.
Check the hood, focus ring, filter thickness and any adapter. Inspect the widest framing for dark corners before relying on a stacked-filter setup.
Step 4 / Test
Make a short test clip.
Check focus, exposure, reflections and stabilization with the actual lens and filter fitted. Repeat after a lens change.
If you are considering a Freewell threaded or magnetic lens-filter system for ILS, confirm the exact lens and required ring before ordering. This guide does not certify a specific ILS lens/filter combination.
06 / Frequently asked questions
The details worth settling.
Is ILS automatically the better camera?
No. Choose it when a specific interchangeable lens improves the shot enough to justify manual setup and the extra kit. For fast, compact coverage, the fixed-lens PRO can be the more useful choice.
Can I put Freewell MISSION 1 PRO filters on the ILS?
No. The custom-fit MISSION 1 PRO / MISSION 1 filters in this guide are for the fixed-lens cameras. ILS filters must match the attached lens and its front thread or holder.
Does every MFT lens work on the ILS?
No. GoPro requires manual focus and compatible manual or fixed aperture operation because the body has no electronic contacts. Check GoPro’s exact lens requirements; the mount alone does not establish full compatibility.
Is the ILS waterproof like the PRO?
No. GoPro describes ILS as weatherproof, not waterproof. The fixed-lens PRO is rated to 20m without a housing. Never transfer the camera’s rating to a third-party accessory or an ILS lens setup.
Which Freewell kit should I start with?
For fixed-lens PRO daylight video, start with Standard Day if exposure is your main concern. Choose Bright Day for combined ND and polarization, or All Day if you want both options. Everyday adds creative filter types; Mega brings the full set together.
Should an ND filter stay on all day?
Only while it helps you reach the exposure you want. Reduce ND strength or remove it as light falls. Keeping strong ND fitted can force higher ISO or an impractically slow shutter.
Can I use the same filter on several ILS lenses?
Possibly, if the lens threads, adapters or base rings and clearances allow it. Confirm each lens separately and test for vignetting, especially with wide lenses or stacked filters.
