Choose 1.33× for the most practical cinematic format, easier composition, and a finished 2.35:1 image when recording 16:9. Choose 1.55× when you deliberately want a more dramatic, ultra-wide 2.76:1 frame. For travel, documentaries, weddings, YouTube and everyday mobile filmmaking, 1.33× is usually the safer starting point. For music videos, short films, landscapes and stylized sequences, 1.55× creates the stronger signature.
What does an anamorphic lens actually do?
A conventional smartphone camera records a scene without changing its horizontal proportions. An anamorphic attachment optically compresses a wider horizontal field of view onto the phone sensor. The recorded image initially looks squeezed. Once it is desqueezed in a compatible camera app or during editing, the frame expands to its intended widescreen shape.
This method preserves horizontal scene information that would be lost if you simply recorded normally and cropped black bars onto the top and bottom. The result is not only a different aspect ratio. The optics also produce recognizable anamorphic characteristics: horizontal light streaks, a wider sense of space and subtle edge character.

Show a subject and more of the environment in the same frame. This is useful for landscapes, architecture, travel and narrative two-shots.

The number describes how much horizontal information the lens squeezes into the original recording. A larger squeeze factor captures a wider view and produces a wider final frame after desqueezing. It also asks more from your composition: subjects can feel smaller, the edges become more important, and vertical-first delivery requires more planning.

Neutral, Gold or Blue flare?
Flare color is a creative decision, not a quality level. It determines how strong point lights such as sunlight at the edge of the frame, streetlamps, signs, headlights and practical lights are rendered across the image.
These frames were captured from the same Freewell flare-module demonstration. Because the light angle changes slightly as the module is switched, use them to compare flare character rather than absolute brightness.
Keep flares subtle when the story calls for it. Move the light farther from the lens axis or flag it slightly. Anamorphic character does not require a bright streak in every shot.
How to desqueeze anamorphic footage
Desqueezing restores the correct horizontal proportions. If it is skipped, or the wrong ratio is selected, faces, circles and objects will look unnaturally narrow or wide.
While recording
Use a camera app with anamorphic preview support and select the same ratio printed on the lens: 1.33× for a 1.33× lens or 1.55× for a 1.55× lens. During editing
Keep the original recording, then apply the matching anamorphic interpretation or horizontal scale in your editor. DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro and other professional editors support anamorphic workflows. Confirm the result with something familiar in the frame, such as a face, wheel, clock or circular light, rather than trusting the timeline label alone.
Simple check: if a person looks too thin, the footage has not been fully desqueezed. If the person looks too wide, the footage has been stretched too far.
How to mount and align a smartphone anamorphic lens
An anamorphic lens must stay level. Even a small rotation tilts every horizontal flare and makes the image feel wrong. Mount the lens over the phone’s main 1× camera unless the product instructions specify another camera, tighten it securely, then use the lens level or a visible horizon to confirm alignment.
- Clean the phone camera and both sides of the anamorphic lens.
- Attach the compatible 17mm case, cage or rig.
- Thread the lens onto the mount without overtightening it.
- Level the lens and check that the main camera is centered behind it.
- Select the correct desqueeze preview in the camera app.
- Record a short test with a face and a point light before the main shoot.

The lens creates the optical character, but exposure and motion determine whether the footage feels controlled. These settings are a reliable starting point rather than a rigid rule.

Do you need an ND filter with an anamorphic lens?
Outdoors, often yes. If you want to keep the cinematic shutter speed above while preserving a chosen ISO, bright daylight can overexpose the image. An ND or variable ND filter reduces incoming light so you do not have to use an unnaturally fast shutter.

The viewer has more horizontal space to scan. Remove distracting bright objects, clipped people and unwanted lines at the far sides before recording.
Use foreground depth
Place an object close to the lens, the subject in the middle distance and a readable background beyond it. This creates depth without relying on extreme digital blur.
Let flares punctuate, not dominate
A flare has more impact when it appears at a meaningful moment. Shift the camera a few centimeters or change the light angle to control its intensity.
