We filmed both cameras in Valencia and compared D-Log, D-Log 2 and S-Log3 footage, standard color, 33MP JPEG photos, dynamic range, low light, digital zoom, stabilization, 4K slow motion, bokeh and autofocus. All conclusions below apply to the cameras, lenses, settings and lighting used in this Freewell field test. Side-by-side images are frames captured from the same comparison video; the camera footage has not been regenerated or replaced.

How we tested the DJI Pocket 4P and Sony A7 V

The Sony A7 V was tested with 20mm, 35mm and 60–70mm views depending on the scene. The DJI Pocket 4P was compared through its 1× and 3× cameras, including selected crop and digital-zoom views. We matched focal lengths as closely as practical, recorded Log and standard profiles, and then examined normal viewing, 400% crops and graded results.

The physical difference is central to this comparison. The Pocket 4P weighed about 230 g in the test. The Sony body, 20–70mm F4 lens and external gimbal combination was roughly 2.3 kg. The Sony is a complete professional camera system; the DJI is a self-contained camera and stabilizer small enough to carry all day.

1. D-Log vs S-Log3 image quality

At normal viewing size, the opening wide-angle comparison was more competitive than expected. Both cameras held the bright architecture and blue sky with a natural graded result. The Sony image had the more refined fine texture, while the DJI delivered a convincing wide view from a dramatically smaller setup.

The 3× camera gave the Pocket 4P a useful 60mm-equivalent perspective. It cannot replace Sony's lens ecosystem, but it adds genuine framing flexibility without changing cameras or mounting another lens.

Enlarging the footage to 400% makes the Sony advantage easier to see. Small architectural lines and textures remain cleaner on the Sony side. The Pocket 4P still performs well for its size, but it relies more heavily on processing and does not retain the same micro-detail.

Does D-Log 2 close the gap with S-Log3?

D-Log 2 produced a flexible image with balanced color, but it did not erase the detail difference. In our close inspection, the original D-Log profile could also appear slightly crisper. D-Log 2 is most useful when its grading response or lower-ISO operation fits the scene; it should not be treated as an automatic image-quality upgrade in every situation.

2. Standard color and 33MP photo quality

Creators who do not grade footage may prefer a ready-to-share color profile. Both cameras produced a bright, punchy image in standard color, but the difference in processing was clear. The DJI Normal profile looked more sharpened, while the Sony picture-profile-off result appeared more controlled.

Both cameras also produced 33MP JPEGs in the tested modes. At normal size, the Pocket 4P photo was more credible than its small body might suggest. At 400%, the Sony again preserved more natural structure and cleaner detail—especially in repeated roof tiles and fine architectural patterns.

3. Dynamic range and highlight recovery

We tested the cameras in a scene with deep shade under a building and bright sunlight outside. This is a difficult exposure because a camera must protect the exterior highlights while retaining enough information in the dark foreground to grade naturally.

After grading, both images held useful highlight and shadow information. The Pocket 4P did not show a visible 17 clean stops in this practical test, but it delivered a strong result for a pocket camera. The Sony remains the safer choice when exposure recovery and professional consistency are critical.

4. Low-light performance

The Sony has the larger, more flexible low-light system, especially when paired with faster lenses. Our footage compared Sony S-Log3 at ISO 25,600 with DJI D-Log at ISO 3,200, so this is a real shooting comparison rather than a claim that the ISO numbers are equivalent.

At 400%, the Sony retained the more dependable fine structure, while the Pocket 4P remained usable at its tested ISO 3,200 setting. The DJI's practical advantage is stabilization: its gimbal can keep a moving night shot smooth without forcing heavy digital stabilization or requiring a separate support system.

The telephoto night comparison produced a similar conclusion. DJI Night Mode can create a brighter, immediately usable result, but the Sony file offers the stronger base for controlled professional post-production.

5. Telephoto reach and digital zoom

The Sony's interchangeable lenses are the obvious long-term advantage. In this test, we also compared a 70mm Sony view using APS-C crop and Clear Image Zoom with the DJI 3× camera pushed to a 6× digital view. At normal size, the DJI crop can be useful for occasional reach. The 400% comparison shows why digital zoom is not a substitute for optical detail.

6. Stabilization and real-world movement

Stabilization is where the Pocket 4P changes the practical comparison. The Sony can produce excellent movement on a gimbal, but the added stabilizer increases weight, setup time and visibility. The DJI's three-axis gimbal is always attached, balanced and ready.

For travel, museums, events, walking videos and fast-moving creator work, the difference is not simply "which image is better?" It is whether the larger system would have been carried and set up at all.

The Pocket 4P recorded 4K/240p in the tested mode, while the Sony recorded 4K/120p. This gives the DJI a clear creative advantage for action, product movement, sports details and dramatic travel B-roll—especially when the larger high-speed setup would be impractical.

Natural bokeh and subject separation

The Sony wins for maximum background separation because its interchangeable lenses provide far more control over aperture, focal length and rendering. The Pocket 4P's 3× camera still produced useful natural separation for portraits and close details, making the second camera more than a simple digital crop tool.

Autofocus

The Sony autofocus was faster, more dependable and more configurable. Eye detection and subject tracking were consistent, while transition speed and sensitivity could be tuned for the shot. The DJI autofocus was useful, but it could switch between people unexpectedly. For controlled framing, selecting a specific focus point can reduce those jumps.

8. ND filters and exposure control

Bright daylight makes it difficult to maintain a natural video shutter speed without reducing incoming light. During this comparison, we used ND and polarizing filters to control exposure and reflections instead of forcing an unusually fast shutter.

Battery life and overheating

Both cameras recorded for about 90 minutes at 4K/50p 10-bit in the tested conditions without an overheating warning. The Pocket 4P still showed roughly 35% battery when its internal storage filled. That suggests close to two hours of recording under this particular setup, although temperature, screen use, stabilization, frame rate and storage conditions will change real-world results.
